Senior Living Should Mean More Connection, Not Less

Moving into a senior living community offers opportunities for companionship, activities, and social engagement. But does living closer to others necessarily mean feeling less lonely?

A study by Taylor, Herbers, and Morrow-Howell (2017) suggests otherwise.

Researchers surveyed 96 older adults living in two senior housing communities. Since moving, 25% reported decreased socialization with family, 20% with friends, and 19% reported decreased companionship. Additionally, 21% felt more left out, while 14% felt more isolated.

Although the study was small and did not establish causation, its findings highlight an important consideration: Physical proximity doesn't automatically create meaningful connection.
